Im lebenden Organismus misst man ca. 16 Zerfälle pro Sekunde pro Gramm Kohlenstoff. In einem alten Holzstück, welches 5 g Kohlenstoff enthält, misst man 44 Zerfälle pro Sekunde. Wie alt ist das Holzstück.
Annahme: linearer Zerfall zwischen zwei Halbwertszeiten, T1_2(C) betrage 5730 Jahre.
