The following 6 molecules are given. One of them is clearly different from all the others. What and why?
{a) } \<|>/<`|>\/\/\{b) } /<`|>\<|>/\/\|{c) } \/\/\<|<`/>\>/{d) } /<`|>\<|>/\/\/{e) } \/\|`/<`\>|<`/>\{f) } \|`/|<`/>\/<`|>\
Solution: The last molecule (f) is different from all others. (a) to (e) are identical, even if they look different. Consider the longest possible carbon chain and see which carbon atoms can be observed branching off with one carbon atom each.
The systematic nomenclature clearly helps to highlight the differences.
